Birth flower for March 14
Hall crabapple
Meaning: beauty asleep
A Tang dynasty story says Emperor Xuanzong, seeing Yang Guifei still drowsy from wine, laughed that she was like a crabapple blossom that had not slept enough, and the flower has been tied to sleeping beauty ever since. The Song poet Su Shi wrote of lighting tall candles at night so the blossoms would not fall asleep. Deep rose buds hang on long slender stalks and open into soft pink flowers.
