Birth flower for December 10
Banksia
Meaning: pleasant solitude
Banksia is named after the English naturalist Joseph Banks, who collected it in Australia in 1770 on Captain Cook's voyage. Each spike is made of hundreds to thousands of tiny flowers that open from the bottom up. Many species keep their seeds locked in woody cones until the heat of a bushfire splits them open, so the plant has learned to live with fire.
