Birth flower for June 30
Madonna lily
Meaning: purity, majesty
The Madonna lily is among the oldest cultivated flowers; it appears on Minoan frescoes from Crete more than three thousand years old. In Christian art it stands for the purity of the Virgin Mary, and in Annunciation paintings the angel Gabriel often holds it. Its flowers are spotless white with golden anthers and a strong perfume. Unusually, it makes a rosette of leaves in autumn and wants its bulb planted barely below the surface.
