Birth flower for May 18
Japanese honeysuckle
Meaning: bonds of love
Japanese honeysuckle flowers open white and turn yellow a day or two later, so a single vine carries both colors, which is why Chinese calls it gold-silver flower. Because its leaves hang on through winter, it is also called rendong, the one that endures winter. The flowers are used in tea and herbal medicine, and many children have sucked nectar from them. In North America it has become an invasive vine.
