Birth flower for February 10
Iceland poppy
Meaning: consolation
Despite the name, the Iceland poppy is native to subarctic North America and Asia rather than Iceland. Its species name nudicaule means "naked stem", because the slender, hairy flower stalks carry no leaves at all. The buds hang their heads, then lift up as they open into four thin petals that look like crumpled tissue paper.
