Birth flower for January 31
Strawberry flower
Meaning: respect and love
The red flesh of a strawberry is really a swollen flower base; each tiny seed on the surface is a true fruit called an achene. The garden strawberry was born by chance in 18th-century France, when the Virginia strawberry from North America crossed with the Chilean strawberry from South America. Dutch traders brought it to Japan in the Edo period, so it is still sometimes called the Dutch strawberry there.
