Birth flower for January 25
Tama-no-ura camellia
Meaning: modest excellence
In 1947 a wild camellia was found in the hills of Tamanoura on Fukue Island, in Nagasaki's Gotō Islands: deep red single flowers, each petal crisply edged in white. Once word spread, collectors dug the wild plants up until they had nearly vanished. Luckily, grafted offspring traveled the world, and Tama-no-ura became a parent of many white-edged camellias.
