Birth flower for January 19
Heather
Meaning: solitude, good luck
In late summer heather turns the Scottish Highlands into rolling purple, the same wild moorland that colors Wuthering Heights. Its name Calluna comes from a Greek word meaning 'to sweep', because people once bound it into brooms and also used it for thatch and bedding. In Scotland white heather is said to bring luck, and brides often tuck a sprig into their bouquets.
