Birth flower for January 1
Snowdrop
Meaning: Hope, consolation
Galanthus, the snowdrop's botanical name, means 'milk flower', and these little white bells often push up through lingering snow as the first flowers of the European year. One legend says an angel turned snowflakes into snowdrops to comfort Adam and Eve after they left Eden. Remarkably, galantamine, a drug used to treat Alzheimer's disease, was first discovered in snowdrop plants.
